5 Summer Cancer Causing Foods to Avoid

Grilling at summer weekend Summer is here and that means everyone is enjoying summer activities and the foods that traditionally go with them. You need to be careful, though, because these five favorite summer foods actually cause cancer, and you should avoid them at all costs.

Five Summer Foods that cause Cancer:

Hot Dogs

These Barbecue favorites are packed full of cancer causing ingredients. In fact they have been linked so conclusively with cancer that the American Institute for Cancer Research recommends cutting them out of your diet entirely. Eating a hot dog a day increases your chances of colorectal cancer by 21% and children who eat a pack of 12 in a month are more at risk of developing leukemia.

Cancer causing ingredients in hot dogs include:

Artificial flavorings, when you see this on your label you have no idea which flavorings are actually being added to your food. Artificial flavorings are chemically created, and don’t occur naturally. There are hundreds of different artificial flavorings and most of them are toxic.

Sodium Nitrate, hotdogs have sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate in them. These two chemicals make old meat look red and bright. They are known for causing cancer in the liver and pancreas. In 1970 the USDA tried to ban the use of them in the states, but food manufacturers complained and the ban was dropped. Sodium nitrate is also found in fertilizers and in fireworks.

Dextrose which is essentially processed sugar, only more refined and more easily absorbed by your body. It causes your body to create large amounts of insulin (insulin spikes) and this ups your chances of type 2 diabetes, causes weight gain, and increases your bad cholesterol levels

Sodium diacetate, which is a fungicide.  It is designed to stop fungal growth in packaged foods, but unfortunately also upsets the human digestive system, which can cause stomach problems.

Once hot dogs are heated compounds called nitrosamines or carcinogens are formed by the nitrites and nitrates merging with the amines.

As if this cocktail of chemicals isn’t bad enough, most hotdogs are also made from the otherwise unusable offcuts and scraps from various different animals. Because you are getting a mix of dicey mixed offcuts you are even more at risk of being exposed to contaminated meats.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Cold drinks and mix-a-drink syrups are a big art of summer for most people. The problem is almost all of these drinks, even the ready-to-drink varieties that you buy at the store, are based on high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup is a sugary sweet substance that’s used in all kinds of sweetened products, most especially sweetened beverages.

High fructose corn syrup is associated with pancreatic cancer. According to Dr Lena Suhaila, ND, from The Cancer Treatment Centres of America in Goodyear, Ariz. She has done extensive research with more than 1,156,512 participants, which proves that these drinks cause pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths.

High Fructose corn syrup can increase your chances of cancer by altering your cellular metabolism, increasing the reactive oxygen species, damaging your DNA and causing inflammation. It is also linked with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The reason why fructose is worse than other carbohydrates is because your body uses this sugar compound first in the synthesis of nucleic acids (your body favors it). The high speed synthesis of nucleic acids that it causes, stimulates the rapid growth of cells, especially cancer cells. The Fructose enhanced protein synthesis seems to promote a more aggressive cancer phenotype.

According to the US department of Agriculture, the average American consumes around 65 pounds of high fructose corn syrup every year, most of which is in the form of sweetened beverages. That’s a lot of cancer promoting drinks.

Soda Pop

Do you love a bottle of cola or pop in the summertime? Most of us do. Unfortunately most sodas, especiallythe caramel coloured varieties like Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi, are loaded with unsafe levels of cancer causing chemicals.

In a study done by a Singapore Chinese Health Study which was conducted with 600 thousand people, over 14 years, people who drink more than two sodas a week have an 87% higher chance of developing pancreatic cancer.

4-methylimidazol

According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), sodas from most popular brands contain high levels of 4-methylimidazol (or 4-MI), a chemical which is believed to cause 15 thousand cases of cancer in the US alone. The levels of 4-MI in these drinks has been found to be four times the safe limit as stipulated by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

The diet or sugar free varieties also contain artificial sweeteners that are known to be carcinogenic. These include aspartame and saccharin, which are respectively linked with bladder tumors and brain tumors.

Microwave Popcorn

No summer is complete without a couple of movies nights with your friends. And what movie is complete without popcorn? But you might want to leave the microwave popcorn on the shelf and go for the old fashioned pop-in-a-pot variety instead.

Microwave popcorn manages to pump toxins into you on a number of levels.

First there’s the bag you pop it in.

The popcorn bag itself contains perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA. PFOA is a listed carcinogen with the US Environmental Agency (EPA). According to laboratory tests, once heated PFOA releases a toxin that causes infertility and cancer in animals.

PFOA has been linked with cancerous tumors in more than four different organs in animal tests done on lab rats.

According to a study published by the Human Reproduction journal PFOA dramatically decrease your fertility. They can increase your chances of infertility by up to 150%.

PFOA studies have also found the chemical to be linked to thyroid disease, which can also led to heart disease, muscle weakness, osteoporosis and stunted development in children.

The Popcorn.

The popcorn and flavorings used in microwave popcorn are not much better than the toxic bags they come in. Microwave popcorn is made with a number of unsafe ingredients.

Soybean Oil is usually a GMO product and is linked with various cancers.

GM Corn. About 86% of corn grown in the US is GM. The “Bt corn” is a strain that was developed which generates its own Bt-toxin, a pesticide that has subsequently been found in traces in the blood of pregnant mothers and their babies. If allowed to build up in your system Bt toxin is toxic to humans and triggers allergic-like reactions.

Preservatives and propyl gallate. Propyl gallate is one of the most common preservatives used in microwave popcorn. It’s been linked to stomach illness, breathing problems and skin rashes.

Diacetyl, responsible for the yummy butter flavoring in most microwave popcorn, is an ingredient which is banned in some places because it is linked to lung diseases.

TBHQis made from poisonous butane gas and can be found in your microwave popcorn. It is associated with dizziness, skin conditions, stomach cancer and asthma. It is something which can accumulate in your body over time, so even though the microwave popcorn contains ‘safe’ levels, if you eat it regularly it can build up ion your system.

Potato Chips and French Fries

We all love potato chips. Sadly, they are one of the most toxic convenience snack foods of all.

First of all you have your “stackable” chips like Pringles. The company themselves have admitted that there is so little potato in these that they can hardly even call them potato chips. So what are they made of? A mush of rice, wheat, corn and potato that’s pressed into the signature stackable shape, then while they’re in their moulds, they are cooked in boiling oil, blown dry and sprayed with powdered flavorings before they reach the can.

Trans fats.Needless to say boiling oil is full of trans fats. Regardless of what kind of chips you’re eating, most of them have been processed with boiling oil at some stage. Even the ones that are baked are not safe.

Acrylamide. This is one of the most dangerous neurotoxic chemicals in chips and crisps. It’s created when the carbohydrates are cooked at super high temperatures (so it doesn’t matter if they are baked or fried or roasted). It’s found not only in crisps but in French fries and chips as well. Usually acrylaminde is found in any food cooked until it has a dry brown or yellow surface (like all chips, crisps and fries). According to tests done in 2005, every brand of potato chip tested was found to be between 39 to 910 times over the legal limit of acrylamide.

Heat Toxins. Well known carcinogens heterocyclic amines (HCAs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs)are all commonly found in crisps and are very toxic. This is according to a three year long project, called Heat-Generated Food Toxins, which was published in 2007.

Here’s what they do to your body:

Heterocyclic Amines (HCAs)is typically found in meat flavored and meat products. They are linked to cancer in various body organs.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)are formed when fat drips onto direct heat. The fat makes smoke which permeates your food and can transfer its cancer causing PAH’s to your food.

Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs)are formed when your food is cooked at high temperatures. AGEs build up in your body over time, causing oxidative stress, inflammation, heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes.

The Solution

For almost every harmful, toxin-loaded summer snack, there is a healthy alternative. If you are willing to be discerning and take a little time to prepare your food, you can enjoy the best of summer without risking your health.

Make your popcorn from scratch, cook your own home-made potato chips and choose good cuts of meat over hot dogs. You can also make sure that you drink fresh, organic juices and avoid anything that’s pumped up with sugar or corn syrup.

The rule of thumb is that if you can’t pronounce half the ingredients you probably shouldn’t eat it. So check your labels. Then buy fresh food and take the time to prepare it. That way you and your family are likely to be around to enjoy the good times for many more summers to come.

Whereas the above information is valuable, there is one correction which should be made: popcorn, even nonorganic varieties, is never genetically modified. Corn (the kind that’s used in cornbread, tortilla chips, polenta, etc.) is most often GMO, but the kernels used for popcorn are a completely different strain. Microwave popcorn is still bad because of the added flavors and preservatives. But airpopped or on-the-stove popped popcorn is a much healthier alternative. Obviously, organic is ideal, but in a pinch, conventional will, at least, not contain GMOs.
