We all know that eating too much fried foods can lead to clogging arteries, obesity, and a number of other health problems.
But most of us still love it so much that and consume these fried foods every day.
That was why Air Fryer was one of the revolutionary kitchen gadgets invented less than a decade ago.
It has been so popular and successful because it allows you to enjoy all kinds of fried foods with little or no oil.
But are they really healthy?
First let’s find out how an Air Fryer works…
What is Air Frying?
An Air Fryer kind of does exactly what you expect it to.
They named it quite succinctly. It uses extremely hot AIR, or more specifically “Rapid Air Technology”, to circulate around the food inside of it and create the crispy, fried-like texture.
In fact, the air gets to 392°F (200°C) and creates the frying-like effect with little to no oil at all. A high-speed fan circulates the hot air in the cooking chamber, so that the food gets heated evenly throughout.
The original makers of the air fryer claim that you can cook fries with up to 80 percent less fat than traditional frying methods.
Is Air Frying Really Healthier?
Well, technically speaking, yes.
Air frying is healthier than deep frying your foods.
However, just because it is healthier, doesn’t mean it is good for you.
It’s only marginally healthier and as you know, deep-fried foods like chicken and French fries are one of the unhealthiest foods, so air-frying isn’t really any better than deep frying.
Firstly, when you cook foods at high temperature, many of the health benefits like the antioxidants and nutrients gets denatured and the nutritional value plummets.
So if you’re eating fried breaded chicken, all you’re really consuming is just oily proteins.
When we are frying foods to the point where the foods turn crispy and slightly brown in color, carcinogenic chemicals are formed.
When you deep fry meat, it’ll form polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which is a carcinogen.
On the other hand, when you fry vegetables, like French fries or tempura, acrylamide is formed.
A study done in 2007 found that there is an increased risk for cancer was found in women who had been exposed to acrylamide.
Acrylamide is a chemical found in foods that are fried too much or are burnt.
Additionally, when you fry foods at high temperature, important vitamins such as A, D, E, C, B, and K as well as potassium, calcium and magnesium are destroyed by the high temperature!
It’s especially so for the case of fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, when it leaches out into the cooking oil and can be lost by the high temperature of the cooking oi.
As much as we all love the crunch of French fries, there are no nutritional value from these fried foods.
If you still want to use your air fryer, one thing to note is to use a type of oil that do not oxidize easily.
I would highly recommend coconut oil as it remains quite stable even at high temperatures.
Secondly, avoid frying processed foods as much as possible.
Processed foods are convenient but contains a lot of additives, preservatives and artificial flavor which is unhealthy to your body.
Instead, prepare your own ingredients and foods so that you control what you are going to fry in the air fryer.
